Occupy Lansing – Saturday October 15

Lansing Mayor Fully Supports Occupy Events

Occupy LansingIf you live in Michigan and have hesitated attending a meetup or rally so far because you’re worried about the local officials’ or police response, today’s rally in Lansing, Michigan may be the thing for you. Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is in open support of the protests, going so far as to specifically say so on his Facebook page, and on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” on Thursday night (transcript here). Bernero has apparently provided protesters currently occupying Reutters Park (one block south of the state Capitol) with portable toilets, trash cans and an open-ended permit for occupation. For the latest on the action in Lansing, visit the Occupy Lansing website or the event page on Facebook. Elsewhere in Michigan, Occupy Detroit marched Friday, and mixed reports are coming through regarding the turnout. The Freep claims there were about 500 protesters, while this Occupy Detroit summary on YouTube claims the numbers were more like 1200-1500. Whatever the numbers, the turnout may have been slightly lower due to confusion caused by a last minute date change from the 21st to the 14th. In any case, there is another Occupy Detroit assembly Sunday at noon in Grand Circus park. We couldn’t find more details, but imagine they will be available at some point on the Occupy Detroit site. Things kick off in the Capitol today at 10am.
